Kingston University, Surrey
Kingston University is one of the country's
fastest growing further education establishments and is now home to over 22,000
students, who are spread across several state-of-the-art campuses in the
upmarket Surrey town of Kingston-On-Thames.
In order to ensure that the students have a stylish and progressive outdoor environment to match the high-tech classroom facilities, the university contacted Pendlewood to revamp outdoor areas at the recently refurbished Penrhyn Road campus - described by the university as "the hub of student activity".
The first, saw Pendlewood create a beautiful reading garden that offers the students a great place to relax and study. Situated as part of the university's Learning Resources Centre, it comprises of bespoke integral planter seating and assorted planter boxes, which combine to make a communal and relaxing area allowing students to escape the intensity of the lecture theatre.
The idea was to ensure the students have a relaxed environment where they can go and study between lectures and seminars. The bespoke planter seating is ideal for this. The layout is such that it lends itself to both group and independent study, while the planters offer a colour and relaxing presence that will help students escape the study of the classroom.
Secondly, Pendlewood were given the task of creating the outdoor seating for a new, state-of-the-art £5m building known as the Nightingale centre. Here we produced 28 of our popular Rhino benches, which have created a fantastic seating area where students can socialise, study or unwind. The sturdy yet distinctive Rhino benches look absolutely fantastic alongside the ultra-modern new building.
Sean Woulfe, Design & Programme Manager at Kingston University, was thrilled with Pendlewood's efforts. He beamed: "I am delighted to say that the Rhino benches and planters look FANTASTIC! It's such a great thing to know that work of this quality is still going on in the UK."
