As an eco-friendly carpentry/design company, we feel the need to explain the origins of our timber that we utilise.
All of our timber comes from sustainably managed forests.
Locally produced timber is truly sustainable and we can monitor the sustainability by keeping a watchful eye on the re-forestation of our local plantations.
We are an FSC accredited supplier. FSC accredited certification means that the forest or origin has been independently inspected and evaluated according to strict environmental, social and economic principles and criteria as agreed by the Forest Stewardship Council A.C’. © 1996 Forest Stewardship A.C
FSC Supplier no: CU-COC-806268
Locally linking in with our own community forest, which to date has planted 895,400 native broad leaf trees, leaving a great, green legacy for our future generations to enjoy.
Street trees play an important part in our timber supplies. These trees are usually only removed as a last resort, usually due to redevelopment or at the natural end of their life.
Our locally produced timber can be traced usually from the day of planting to the dignified end of its first life. We at Pendlewood care about these trees so we have developed our own planking and air-drying facilities in order that our timber is seasoned naturally to avoid any additional strain on the environment.

European Redwood: (Pinus sylvestris)
Due to Environmental and endurance of our products we have chose to use European Redwood. This is one of the hardest softwoods available and is suitable for exterior usage. With its natural resilience the introduction of tanalith E helps this timber have a greater life span than some hardwoods with out the environmental implications associated with exotic hardwoods.
Redwood timber is fully grown in 50 years, Harvested and replanted in half the time it takes a Hardwood tree to reach maturity.
Harvested from sustainable forests.
We are an FSC accredited company.

European/English Oak (Quercus robur and Quercus petarea)
General: Structure and quality are both affected by growth conditions. Typical material has altering zones of largely-pored wood and dense late wood, but in slow-grown timber the late wood zones may almost be eliminated, the timber being consequently soft and light in weight. The Oak we source however is predominantly home grown and is often slow, of even growth, uniformed in colour and straight in grain and that includes the Oak we source from England, which also tends to be of a harder and tougher nature.
Weight: This will vary according to origin and character of growth obviously. But, our Oak sourced locally averages at about 720kg/m3 (42lb/ft3) this density making it durable and increasing the timbers longevity. And the Oak has an approx. moisture content of 12%, and so whilst not only being substantial in weight the low moisture content means that the timber is also unlikely to suffer severe movement and cracks once machined.
Durability: Oak is one of the most durable hardwood timbers in the trade and with permeable sapwood once treated the treatments are absorbed into the timber and it becomes highly resistant to rot and the general weathering process is reduced by a significant amount.
Usages: Oak is one of the most widely used hardwoods in the UK. Used in the manufacturing industry for exterior work. Its impermeability combined with good bending properties allows it to be used in a highly decorative manner in the timber industry.
Iroko (Chlorophora excelsa)
General: A west African Hardwood. When freshly cut, or when unexposed to light, the heartwood is a distinct yellow colour, but on exposure to light it quickly becomes golden-brown. The sapwood is narrow and clearly defined with the grain usually interlocked.
Weight: It varies according to character and growth but on average weighs 660 kg/m3 when dried.
Durability: Iroko is a very durable timber and is a close member of the teak family.
Usages: Iroko is another very popular hardwood used within the external works industry. Its strength is exemplified by its wide usage on everything from decking to benches.
Strength: Iroko has excellent strength properties, and is strong when compared with Teak.
Locally produced timber usually means that the timber has been grown in the United Kingdom. At Pendlewood our timber originates from within a 20-mile radius from our workshop.

Timber that has previously been used as another product. Usually re-fashioned and re-used in another product.

Trees that grow in our own local communities.
Park trees/ Garden trees / Avenue trees.

Normally from demolition sites. This timber is usually seasoned for many years and is from an age when timber was allowed the time to mature naturally.

Timber that is guaranteed to have come from a well managed plantation.
